Good news on timing. Across the UK, a complete application is currently taking around seven to eight weeks from submission to grant. We are seeing Manchester and Scotland closer to six to seven weeks, while London is typically nearer nine weeks. These are guides, not guarantees, but the trend is heading the right way.
The grant is only one step
Once the grant is issued, the wider estate administration begins. This is the part that involves gathering and valuing assets, settling tax and debts, selling property, and distributing funds. In most cases, that end‑to‑end process takes nine to eighteen months, depending on the complexity of the estate and family circumstances.
Helpful HMCTS changes
His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service has introduced several improvements designed to keep cases moving:
- Status updates if a case has been inactive at eight weeks, twelve weeks, or five months
- A simplified helpline
- Better scanning and document handling
- A wider scope for online applications
A handful of straightforward cases have seen very rapid turnarounds, but that remains the exception rather than the rule.
One cost to factor in
Since mid‑November 2025, each sealed copy of the grant and related documents such as the will or letters of administration costs £16 per copy. Ordering the right number at the outset helps avoid repeat fees and unnecessary delays.
