LPA fees are rising on 17 November 2025 — what this means and what to do now

A simple update for families planning ahead

The Ministry of Justice has announced an increase to the fee for registering a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). If you’re thinking about putting LPAs in place for yourself or a loved one, here’s what’s changing and the practical steps to take.

What’s changing?

• The application fee is rising from £82 to £92 per LPA.

• When it applies: the new fee will apply to applications received by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) from Monday 17 November 2025.

• Most people make two LPAs — one for Property & Financial Affairs and one for Health & Welfare.

• Typical costs at a glance:

• One person, one LPA: £82 now → £92 from 17 Nov

• One person, both LPAs: £164 now → £184 from 17 Nov

• Couple, both LPAs each (4 LPAs): £328 now → £368 from 17 Nov

• Help with fees is available: exemptions (no fee) for certain means‑tested benefits, and a 50% remission if the donor’s gross income is £12,000 or less.

Bottom line: If you’re close to getting your LPAs sorted, sending a clean, complete application before mid‑November could save money and avoid the pre‑Christmas rush.

What should I do now?

✅ Decide who you trust to act as your attorneys and name backups (replacement attorneys).

✅ Gather your details (full legal names, addresses, dates of birth) and have your ID to hand.

✅ Plan the signing order — donor, certificate provider, attorneys, and witnesses must sign in the correct sequence.

✅ Aim to submit early — if posting, allow for delivery time. Online applications are available and can be tracked.

✅ Check if you qualify for fee help — exemptions or remissions — and get evidence ready to submit with your application.

Common mistakes that cause delays

• Names or addresses that don’t match ID

• Missing or incorrect witness details

• Signing in the wrong order

• Unclear or unworkable instructions/preferences

These errors can cause rejections and add weeks to the process. Getting it right first time makes a big difference.
